Join us in Narvik as we cross the Arctic Circle and explore northern Norway across two dramatic days filled with culture, stormy weather, coastal walks and the big question: did we see the northern lights?
In this episode, we arrive in Narvik on a Fred Olsen Borealis cruise for an overnight stay. Our adventure begins with a fascinating Sami experience, where we learn about the culture, history, stories and spiritual traditions of the indigenous Sami people. Inside a traditional tent, we take part in a ceremony with drumming and chanting, enjoy local refreshments and even meet husky puppies.
Back in Narvik, we attempt to find the seafront walk, but the weather has other plans. With gale-force winds, heavy rain and failing waterproof trousers, we battle through the town to reach the tourist information centre by the war museum and pick up maps for walking routes around the harbour and coastal paths.
On day two, we wrap up warm and try again. This time we successfully reach the coastal trail overlooking the fjord. Despite cold winds and showers, we discover peaceful viewpoints, rugged scenery and the feeling of everyday Norwegian life far from the main tourist areas. If you are visiting Narvik by cruise ship, this is a great option if you enjoy walking, photography and exploring independently.
Throughout the video, we share practical tips on navigating Narvik from the cruise terminal, finding the tourist information centre, what to expect on a Sami cultural excursion, and how the weather can change rapidly in the Arctic. And of course, we follow the ongoing mystery of whether we will finally see the northern lights before we sail away toward Stavanger.
If you are researching Narvik cruise excursions, Arctic Circle cruising, northern lights travel or independent things to do in Narvik, this vlog will give you a genuine, first-hand look at what to expect.
