Exploring Port Arthur Tasmania with Pacific Adventure

Today, the Pacific Adventure arrived at Port Arthur. Port Arthur is a village and historic site in southern Tasmania, Australia. Sitting on the Tasman Peninsula, it was a 19th-century penal settlement and is now an open-air museum. After catching a water shuttle to the dock, we walked along the shoreline and across the bridge to the Penitentiary. This old prison cell block is fascinating. Only a handful of the original 136 cells built remain on the ground floor. After the Penitentiary, we had a look at some of the 30 buildings and ruins scattered around the site, including the Guard tower and the Separate Prison The separate prison was the silent prison. Prisoners were only allowed to be referred to by number, never by their name. The cells were so small. Solitary confinement cells in the Separate Prison building were used to inflict mental punishment in place of floggings. The massive Church was built by convicts, but all that remains are the walls. We walked through the ruins of Government House which and open out to a view down through the manicured gardens. After 5 hours of wandering over the grounds, we stopped at the Visitors Centre and Cafe for lunch and coffee. Finally, we walked through the Memorial Garden. The garden, featuring a pool of peace, commemorates the victims of Australia’s worst mass murder, which occurred at Port Arthur in 1996.
