This is the full visit to Ekasup Village in Port Vila, Vanuatu tour and musical display.
Ekasup Village has been established for 10 to 11 years and supports a community of (corrections) 500 people.
The village visit provides a unique opportunity to immerse in the local culture.
The visit aimed to expose visitors to the local culture of Ekasup Village.
The Ekasup Village tour is a unique cultural tour from Port Villa. Prepare by ensuring you have the essentials such as cash, photo ID, glasses, and a power pack for electronic devices. Additionally, they had a poncho on hand in case of rain, but the most critical aspect was having the tour tickets and arriving at the designated meeting place on time.
The journey started at Port Villa, an active shipping port, where early morning activities included local buses gearing up to transport cruise passengers. Travelers had two options upon disembarking the ship: those with organized excursions by the cruise ship went to the right, while others seeking taxis or general buses moved to the left. Upon exiting the dock, passengers followed instructions to meet the shore excursion representative, identifiable in hi-vis orange attire. After handing over the ticket, participants located their tour bus.
After a 15-minute drive, you arrive at Ekasup Village, where our presence was announced by tribesmen blowing a conch shell. The guide at the village shared insights into the local culture, highlighting the significance of the village as a hub for various languages and cultures. The speaker learned that there were around 83 islands with over 100 languages spoken in the region, making it a culturally diverse and vibrant place.
The guide also explained their unique fishing techniques, involving large ceremonies where fish would be caught. This contrasted with the speaker's previous experience of short-lived celebrations in the city. They were fascinated by the traditional ways of life, where the village's main animals were wild pigs and chickens, which had been present for over a century. The tour included a demonstration of how they caught pigs, which involved suspending them by their feet from trees.
The village has a strong cultural and religious background. Most villagers followed Christian practices, attending church services regularly, and dressing in island attire for the occasion. The guide shared a fascinating cultural tradition where marriages were arranged based on land ownership, and tattoos played a significant role in identifying one's family and origins.
The tour also delved into the use of medicinal plants, with the guide explaining that 85% of the trees in the area had medicinal properties. The guide demonstrated how certain plants were used to support pregnant women during their pregnancy, equating it to taking iron tablets in English medicine.
The tour further explored the island's historical practices, such as hunting and trapping pigs, and the importance of land ownership in tribal conflicts.
The arrival of Europeans, including the famous visit of Reverend John Williams, had a significant impact on the region's history. They were also introduced to the dense forest and its hidden huts, where locals would gather to drink kava, a traditional beverage.
The tour concluded with a visit to a souvenir shop, offering visitors a chance to take home a piece of Ekasup Village with them. Overall, the tour provided a rich and immersive experience into the cultural heritage of Port Villa's Ekasup Village displaying the unique customs and traditions of the region.
