In the world of cruise travel, advice and recommendations abound, often promising to enhance your cruise experience. However, not all guidance is created equal, and some commonly touted suggestions may not be as valuable as they initially seem. Here are nine aspects of cruise ship advice that I think have been overrated.
To begin, I challenge the idea of accepting cabin upgrades. While it might seem like a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a more luxurious room, she points out that upgrades can sometimes come with downsides, such as noise or less desirable locations. This highlights the importance of carefully considering the trade-offs before accepting an upgrade.
Secondly, I look at balcony cabins. While they are often romanticized, especially on longer cruises, I argue that their value may diminish on shorter voyages. My point is valid since the extra expense of a balcony may not be justified for a brief cruise where passengers spend less time in their cabins.
Next, specialty dining is put under the spotlight. I suggest that it is overrated, especially if there isn't a special occasion to celebrate. Cruise ships typically offer a variety of dining options included in the fare, making specialty dining an optional expense.
I am not a huge fan of cruise ship hot tubs. I view them as a less-than-hygienic experience due to the mingling of body fluids, sunscreen, and more. This raises questions about the cleanliness and appeal of hot tubs, which may not align with the relaxation they promise.
Private islands, often touted as exclusive havens, are also criticized. I argue that they can be overrated due to additional fees for exclusive experiences or excursions. Instead, I encourage cruisers to consider supporting local businesses at regular ports of call.
Furthermore, I question the value of cruise company transfers to and from the airport. I share a personal experience where waiting for multiple flights delayed her transfer, leading to unnecessary stress. This highlights the importance of evaluating transportation options independently.
The spa services offered on cruise ships are another area of concern for me. I assert that these services are overpriced compared to what is available on land, and she cautions against upselling tactics that may inflate the final bill.
Shopping lectures on cruise ships also come under scrutiny. I highlight how cruise lines promote certain stores with a vested interest, potentially leading passengers to make purchases they later regret. Instead, she advocates for supporting local, independent businesses.
Lastly, I address the allure of onboard gambling. While acknowledging the potential for free perks, I emphasize the importance of responsible gambling and not being lured into excessive spending. Hopefully, my insights will serve as a reminder of the risks associated with casino activities on cruise ships.
I challenge you to rethink your choices and evaluate the true value of various cruise ship amenities and recommendations. As travellers embark on your voyage, you should consider my insights to make informed decisions and tailor their cruise experiences to their preferences and budget constraints. By separating fact from fiction, cruisers can maximize their enjoyment while minimizing unwarranted expenses and disappointments.
