A home port cruise is always an opportunity to pack a little more. No weight restrictions at the moment for checking the luggage.
Hi everyone, I’m Julie from Jules Cruise Companion, and today I’m walking you through exactly how I packed for a 10-night cruise to Papua New Guinea—without flying, without stress, and with a few extra tricks along the way!
Because this cruise starts from my home port, I’m using my Flylite luggage—and I’m not restricted by airline weight limits, so I've packed a bit more than usual... about 20.6 kilos, plus a carry-on that I’ll also check in.
🛏️ Night Before Disembarkation Tip:
Don’t forget—you’ll need an overnight bag for the last night of the cruise!
That includes:
Pyjamas
Toiletries (wet pack)
Morning clothes for disembarkation
It’s a common oversight, so always have a small bag ready to take those last essentials off with you.
🧳 Main Luggage Breakdown:
Let’s take a look inside...
📌 Intimates – I've packed extra underwear and bras so I can avoid doing laundry on board.
📌 Leggings – Multiple pairs for easy mix & match.
📌 Cruise outfit for embarkation day – A green top, crew scarf, and leggings.
📌 Sleeveless tops & undershirts – Perfect for layering.
📌 Light jumpers – One pullover and one zip-up, because it can get chilly at sea.
📌 Dressy options – 4 evening tops for dinner nights, mixed with the same bottoms.
📌 Shawls & scarves – Not needed much for PNG, but very useful for Jordan, which I’m also prepping for.
And... I’ve thrown in a wild shirt for the day we dock back in Brisbane, just to make a statement!
🎒 Bonus: I packed a few copies of my book for cruise friends—so without them, I’d probably be under 20kg.
📦 Wet Pack & Laundry Kit
Microfibre towel
Spray jacket
Over-the-door toiletry kit
Portable laundry set with hooks (see my separate video on that!)
🔌 Electronics Pack Essentials
This pouch is my go-to for everything tech:
USBs & backup storage
Universal converters
Multiple cables (because we always lose one)
Spare earbuds
External mic for better sound quality
Car charger & adapters
External keyboard + backup batteries (for my tablet)
TIP: If you lose a cable while traveling, try checking hotel reception—people leave them behind all the time!
🎒 Personal Item: My Crumpler Bag
I’m obsessed with this Melbourne-brand bag. It's durable, has tons of pockets, and the strap is just right.
Here’s what I keep inside:
Passport & paperwork
Medications – I’m on some strong ones right now, so they stay close.
Sunglasses & fan – Yes, I still carry a fan even post-menopause!
Local currency – Kina for PNG.
Hygiene items
Business cards & pens
Sticky tape – Pro tip: reinforce your luggage tags with tape instead of a stapler.
Tablet + keyboard
Fun hats – Souvenirs to give away at the end of the cruise.
🧳 Final Round-Up:
I’m using Flylite suitcases this trip, but I also rotate in the Kathmandu Hybrid for longer journeys. Either way, I’m all packed and ready to cruise!
