Australia is open for cruising. For people who are anxious about traveling, let's look at some of the things we can do to address our anxiety. Cruising hasn’t been smooth sailing with a worldwide pandemic. On Coral Princess over 114 cases of COVID, around 100 crew and 14 passengers. Do your own risk assessment when deciding if cruising is for you.
Full disclosure, I’m an RN who has studied psychology. I am NOT a psychologist, psychiatrist, or registered medical officer. Everything I say is general in nature.
If you do suffer from any form of medical condition or a mental health problem including anxiety, depression, etc., get the support to assist you so when cruising.
Risk is everywhere, getting into a car, eating food if you've got an allergy, etc.
We must balance the risk with the negative outcome and the positive. Get to know your own risk tolerance. Signs of anxiety, palpitations, sweating, hyperventilation, lack of sleep, etc. where you deem the risk is too great, don't do the activity.
Some people are risk averse and want to void risk altogether, to avoid any form of harm.
General risks of cruising, seasickness, diarrhea & vomiting, Norovirus, missing a port, breaking your leg, emptying your wallet, putting too much on the credit card. Find ways to mitigate some risk. Take out travel insurance to cover some of the losses you could incur. Don’t listen to media that catastrophize. Things were different when the virus first arrived. We didn't know how it was spread. We didn't have any vaccinations. We didn't know any protocols. We didn't know what to do that could mitigate the spread. Lessons were learnt from Ruby Princess. We cannot anchor ourselves in the past, we've got to take in all the perspectives, what has been happening since then & where we can go in the future. Regardless of political beliefs, I perceive the government did a reasonable job of taking in some strategies at the beginning of the virus. Isolation & vaccination to mitigate when we did meet a virus. Hoping that the outcome or the sickness or the level or degree of illness was not going to be so bad. We have focused on trying to mitigate any of the consequences when we do come become exposed to the virus. With vaccination, increased immunity, when they did meet the virus, there was a higher probability the symptoms weren’t as bad & the whole process of the virus didn't last as long. Whether that's been achieved or not that's going to be something for the history books.
Risks of traveling on a cruise ship in Aust. We do have a risk of catching a virus. We do have a risk of all the other things like Norovirus, diarrhea & vomiting. The risk of testing positive requires quarantine. Does that quarantine have to happen out of state, where then you've got out-of-pocket expenses? Home quarantine? Financial cost? Self-employed?
What level you are comfortable with. If this risk increases to a point where you are showing physical signs of anxiety, where you deem the risk too great. then don't do the activity.
Balance negatives & positives.
Low risk, risk averse not risking negative outcomes.
Medium risk, it's going to be fine & whatever comes along.
High risk doesn't matter what happens, live without regret.
If you are thinking about is all the negative consequences, you're not going to enjoy the cruise so maybe it is time for you to pull out. Examine your cruise insurance or your cancellation policies.
If cruising was dangerous, the company would be offering options to cancel without negative consequences. The cruise industry, serial cruisers & the government wants cruising to survive. Everybody is invested in making cruising work. To keep it in perspective you must look at the historical information with teething problems. Let's not over-catastrophize over small stumbling roadblocks. If you are a low-risk taker with a high probability of anxiety & concerned maybe, you should engage a health professional's CBT to assist you to work through some of your thoughts & decision-making.
Maybe wait a little longer until 2023 & 2024 until cruising is right for you to enjoy a wonderful experience on the open ocean. Do a risk analysis by writing down the negatives & positives & balance to see if cruising is right for you. Nothing in life is risk-free, we must be comfortable with the level of risk that we are taking. Talk to people around you, considering those people around aren’t just naysayers, the ones that are going to reinforce a lot of the negative thoughts. We may just need an open mind to other ideas,
Stay Safe & Happy Travels.
