Emperor Trajan developed the harbor in the 2nd century AD, and remnants like the Forte Michelangelo—a Renaissance fortress designed in part by Michelangelo—still stand today. Cruise Port: It’s one of the busiest cruise ports in Italy, often referred to as the "Port of Rome." Many travelers pass through Civitavecchia en route to Rome on cruise excursions.
