This was only our 2nd Royal cruise out of 50 cruises! Let's sea how it stacks up?!
Civitavecchia is a port city located on the western coast of Italy, in the Lazio region, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Rome. Its name means "ancient town" in Italian, and it's known primarily for its large seaport, which serves as a major gateway between mainland Italy and destinations across the Mediterranean Sea, including Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, and Tunisia.
Key Highlights:
Historical Significance: Civitavecchia has roots dating back to Etruscan and Roman times. Emperor Trajan developed the harbor in the 2nd century AD, and remnants like the Forte Michelangelo—a Renaissance fortress designed in part by Michelangelo—still stand today.
Cruise Port: It’s one of the busiest cruise ports in Italy, often referred to as the "Port of Rome." Many travelers pass through Civitavecchia en route to Rome on cruise excursions.
Local Attractions:
Forte Michelangelo
Terme Taurine (ancient Roman thermal baths)
Civitavecchia Cathedral
A charming seafront promenade with restaurants and cafes
Transportation: Civitavecchia is well-connected by train and highway to Rome, making it a common starting or stopping point for tourists.
In essence, Civitavecchia blends ancient history, modern port activity, and easy access to Rome, making it both a functional and culturally interesting city.
