Can you explore Juneau on your own during an Alaska cruise?
Yes — and we did.
While sailing on the Norwegian Jade with Norwegian Cruise Line, we spent a full day in Juneau without booking a cruise line excursion.
Here’s exactly how we did it.
What we did in Juneau:
– Took a taxi directly to Mendenhall Glacier
– Hiked the Nugget Falls Trail (easy, scenic, about 1 mile)
– Walked to Glacier Point for additional views
– Visited the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center
– Had lunch at The Hangar on the Wharf
– Explored downtown Juneau before heading back to the ship
Juneau is one of the easiest Alaska cruise ports to explore independently. Transportation is simple, trails are well marked, and you don’t necessarily need a cruise excursion to see the highlights.
