Do you need cash to travel to the Pacific Island cruise out of Australia?
I advise carrying Australian currency in small denominations and suggest allocating enough AUD 45 to AUD 50 per person for each island to cover expenses such as drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and local excursions local activities like snorkelling excursions or kayaking.
I choose not to exchange Australian currency for local currencies, as this would incur commissions and exchange rates.
If travellers do not bring enough cash with them, they can use an ATM on the boat, but it has a high fee.
Another option is to go to the casino, put some money onto the casino card from the room, and then cash it out in small denominations.
Most shops in the Pacific Islands do not take credit cards, except for the bigger duty-free shops or Johnson and Johnson in Noumea.
If you do use your credit card overseas it is better to choose the exchange rate for one's own bank at home rather than the international company's rate.
The different currencies used on various Pacific Islands, including Vanuatu's Vatu, New Caledonia's French Pacific Francs, Fijian dollar, Tala and Sene in Samoa, and Pa ‘anga in Tonga.
The host advises budgeting around AUD50 per day, including a little extra for tipping and buying souvenirs, to support the local economy which relies heavily on tourism.
