On my recent Carnival Luminosa Transpacific cruise, I experienced the famous Crossing the Equator Ceremony — and it was every bit as hilarious, messy, and unforgettable as you’d imagine!
In this video, I’ll share the rich naval traditions, myths, and legends behind this time-honoured ritual. Dating back to the 16th century, the ceremony was once a serious sailor’s initiation — where “Pollywogs” (first-timers) faced challenges before being accepted as true “Shellbacks.” Today, it’s pure fun, with crew and passengers joining in a theatrical re-creation of King Neptune’s Court.
Expect lots of laughter, costumes, playful “trials,” and silly punishments — from being shaved to covered in egg and spaghetti to the famous kissing the fish tradition. On Carnival Luminosa, even Cruise Director Zack, Captain Binacchi and the crew got into character, making it a highlight of the voyage.
If you love cruise vlogs, Carnival Cruise Line adventures, or unique travel traditions, this is a must-watch!
