Kochi takes its name from the great feudal castle that sits at its very heart. The castle was completed in 1611 and was the seat of the Yamauchi Kazutoyo, a noted warrior who supported Tokugawa leyasu in his successful quest to become Shogun.
There local province and the castle were reward to Yamauchi for supporting Tokugawa.
250 years later, a Kochi native son - former low-ranked samurai named Sakamoto Ryoma played a pivotal roll in bringing Tokugawa Shogunate to an end and restoring the Emperor of Japan to political prominence.
Kochi is one of the wealthiest places in nJapan. It is also subject to frequent cyclonic storms. On our visit, not cyclic, but very wet.
