Today I'm sharing with you my adventures on Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas North Star.
The North Star on Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas is a glass-enclosed pod, similar to the London Eye capsule but smaller. It is attached to a giant mechanical arm that lifts the pod up and down and out over the side of the ship. The experience is a cross between a modern Ferris wheel and a ski resort gondola ride. The North Star moves slowly, as the arm rises 300 feet above sea level.
The ride lasts about 10-15 minutes and can accommodate up to 14 passengers (and one operator), including one person in a wheelchair per ride. The wheelchair is strapped and buckled in, for extra safety.
The North Star is fully air conditioned for comfort. You will need to walk up a spiral staircase to board. Thankfully there is a very basic elevator which will accommodate 1-2 passengers should they have difficulty with stairs, or even vision difficulties going down stairs.
It is possible to make a reservation to ride the North Star, but I chose to ride whenever Ovation was in port. I found that reservations were only available on sea days, and I really preferred to see more than just ocean. It's best to arrive as early as possible (operating times are listed in the ship's daily Cruise Compass newsletter). Be ready to wait in line for up to an hour or more if you arrive during the middle of its operating time. You need to be aware that the North Star will cancel rides during rough seas and bad weather.
It is well worth the effort to queue up and take a ride, just to take in the wonderful vistas at port. Makes for great photo opportunities too!
So, relax and enjoy some of the vistas on the North Star during my recent Transpacific cruise from Sydney to Hawaii.
