Enjoying a morning walk. 3 top tips to stay healthy. Exercise Don't eat too much, Don't drink to much alcohol.
It’s 5:00 a.m. on P&O Pacific Dawn, and I’ve just run into a couple of guys who proudly informed me they haven’t been to bed yet—still going strong with beers in hand. Meanwhile, I’m here for a different kind of early start, soaking up the peace and quiet while the sun begins to rise over the Coral Sea. The deck crew is already hard at work, sweeping away the excess water from last night’s rain, and I’ve given myself another fifty minutes to keep walking before breakfast.
One thing I’ve learned cruising is that it’s possible to stay healthy, even with all the tempting food and lazy lounging options. My three top tips for keeping well on a cruise? It’s simple: move a little, eat mindfully, and take it easy on the alcohol. I know it might sound like a bit of a buzzkill, but honestly, it makes the trip more enjoyable in the long run.
Movement doesn’t have to mean structured workouts—you naturally rack up steps just going from one end of the ship to the other. From the buffet to the theatre, from your cabin to the sun deck, it all adds up. I also make a point of using the stairs whenever I can. Not only does it avoid the elevator crowds during busy times, but it’s also a great way to sneak in a bit more cardio.
When it comes to food, it’s okay to try a little bit of everything, just don’t feel obligated to finish every plate. You’re not wasting food—you’re being kind to your body. And as for drinks, enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine, but maybe don’t go all in every night. Your liver and kidneys will thank you, and you’ll have a better time not feeling rough the next day. Plus, remember: security is always around, and you don’t want to be that person on the cruise.
Now that the sun is truly awake and painting the sky with soft pastels, it’s almost time for breakfast. Since I’ve already done a fair bit of walking, I’m thinking I might treat myself to some eggs on toast. The track is starting to fill with more early risers, and the energy on the deck is shifting from sleepy to lively.
This is how I love to start my day at sea: a peaceful walk, a stunning sunrise, and that quiet sense of freedom that only comes from being in the middle of the ocean. The ship glides on, and so do I. Bon voyage and happy sailing to you, wherever you're headed today.
