The Windstar Star Breeze Dreams of Tahiti cruise stops at Raiatea French Polynesia on Day 4. See the Raiatea Cultural Cruise excursion to the Marae Taputapuatea UNESCO site and walk Uturoa Port.
Day 4 of the Windstar Dreams of Tahiti journey begins as the Star Breeze cruise ship arrives at Raiatea, the spiritual heart of French Polynesia. This adventure combines a lagoon excursion, a cultural visit to one of the most important archaeological sites in the Pacific, and a practical walking tour around the Uturoa port to help future travellers understand what this island offers when arriving by ship.
Stepping off Windstar Star Breeze, I start with a simple Uturoa port walk to see what is immediately available around the pier. Uturoa town is compact and easy to navigate, with banks, a chemist, supermarkets, cafés, souvenir shops, boat hire stands and access to the waterfront.
This part of the day is grounded in real movement through the streets, showing how the port connects to the town and what you can expect when exploring independently. The Uturoa walking tour also gives a sense of local life, from the marina to swimming and snorkelling spots used by residents.
From the docks, I then join Windstar's Raiatea Cultural Cruise excursion, boarding a speedboat to travel across the lagoon between Raiatea and Tahaa. The journey passes the Temehani plateau, Tapioi mountain and the narrow channel shared by both islands, with the guide explaining how these landscapes shaped ancient navigation. The lagoon crossing is calm and scenic, offering views of the Society Islands that help frame the cultural significance of the day.
The excursion leads to the UNESCO‑listed Marae Taputapuatea, one of the most important cultural sites in Polynesia. The visit includes Marae Hauviri, historically used for the investiture of high chiefs, and references to older temples such as Marae Vaeāra’i and Marae Taumariari located inland.
The Marae Taputapuatea complex sits before Te Ava Mo’a, the sacred pass in the reef where ocean‑going vaka once entered during ceremonial voyages. Behind the site rises Tea’etapu mountain, with the Ōpo’a and Hotopu’u valleys extending inland, once filled with terraces, dwellings and ceremonial structures. The guide explains how vaka routes connected Raiatea to Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island, reinforcing the island’s role as a cultural centre of the Pacific.
After exploring the marae, the excursion continues past the Bay of Faaroa, historically used as a shelter for long‑distance canoes. The return trip offers more views of the lagoon before arriving back at Uturoa port and re‑boarding Star Breeze.
The evening on board shifts to a slower rhythm. I spend time in the hot tubs, talk with other guests and then visit Basil and Bamboo, one of the ship’s dining restaurants. The experience includes Asian‑inspired dishes and a relaxed atmosphere that fits the pace of the Dreams of Tahiti itinerary. This part of the day reflects on the travel rhythm of balancing cultural exploration with downtime on the ship.
Raiatea offers a wide range of things to do for travellers arriving by cruise ship. The Uturoa cruise port area is a starting point for many Raiatea tours, including lagoon trips, cultural visits and short walks. Many people look for things to do in Raiatea that combine nature, culture and easy access from the pier.
The Raiatea Cultural Cruise is one of the most popular Windstar Tahiti excursions and should be at the top of your Raiatea things to do on your port day list. It can even be an independent Raiatea sightseeing experience using a hire boat or bike.
There's a reason Marae Taputapuatea is consistently listed among the top things to do in Raiatea for travellers interested in Polynesian history! Even if just for the lagoon cruise.
The walking tour of Uturoa Raiatea is also a handy guide for those who don't intend to do an excursion.
