As I sit here in my deck one cabin on the Carnival Luminosa, cabin number 1289, I find myself reflecting on a conversation I had with some fellow cruisers as we were boarding the ship. They were relatively new to cruising, with one on their second voyage and the other experiencing their very first. Naturally, they were intrigued when they learned that this journey marked my 49th cruise. After sharing a bit about my extensive cruising history, they were particularly interested in how I manage my luggage. I explained that over the years, I've streamlined my packing process to perfection, both in my carry-on and checked luggage. Let me walk you through what I typically pack in my checked luggage:
Packing Cubes for Organization: In my checked luggage, I rely heavily on packing cubes to keep everything structured and easily accessible. On the left-hand side of my suitcase, I have two packing cubes. One contains my intimate wear, nightwear, and swimming attire, while the larger cube holds my day and evening clothes, including tops and bottoms. This method ensures that everything stays neatly separated and minimizes the risk of items getting lost or wrinkled during transit.
Versatile Clothing Choices: When it comes to clothing, I opt for mix-and-match pieces that can be layered to create various outfits. I avoid heavy items like jeans or bulky jackets, instead focusing on lightweight options that can easily be layered for warmth if needed. This approach not only saves space in my luggage but also allows me to adapt to different weather conditions or dress codes onboard the ship.
Multi-purpose Accessories: My choice of accessories is equally strategic. I pack a leather purse with multiple pockets and an adjustable strap, which serves me well for both daytime excursions and evening events. It's a versatile piece that complements any outfit and has proven to be durable over the years. Additionally, I include some bold jewelry pieces with adjustable necklaces that add a pop of color to my ensembles and draw attention to my attire.
Footwear Selection: Shoes can quickly eat up space in your luggage, so I limit myself to three pairs. I wear my most comfortable shoes during travel, typically sandals or flip-flops, and pack two pairs of lightweight shoes that can transition from casual to formal occasions. While they may not be the most forgiving in terms of comfort, these classic shoes serve their purpose and help me pack light without sacrificing style.
Functional Extras: Finally, I make sure to include some essential extras in my checked luggage. This includes a toiletry bag with all the necessary items for my hygiene routine, as well as a medicine pack stocked with essentials for common ailments like chest infections or nausea. I also carry a few face masks for added safety, along with an N95 mask for situations where extra protection may be warranted.
By carefully selecting and organizing my belongings, I've mastered the art of packing light for my cruises. With a focus on versatility, functionality, and efficiency, I ensure that my checked luggage contains everything I need for a comfortable and enjoyable journey aboard the ship.
