Australia is considered the lucky country by many, and our ocean borders have helped to curb the spread of COVID in this country. With low-to-no community transmission, Australia and New Zealand have announced a joint travel bubble that will allow residents of both countries to freely travel between the two countries.
So the question becomes - why aren't we cruising yet?
We've seen cruising restart overseas with great success, specifically Quantum of the Seas' ongoing season from Singapore (which has just been extended through to October 2021) where unvaccinated guests have been able to enjoy cruises to nowhere without issue. Now, Australians and Kiwis will be able to travel internationally between the two nations, yet cruising remains a distant possibility, with no further information from the government about what the cruising restart will look like, or when we might expect it to recommence.
The suspension of cruising around the world and in this country was necessary - there is no doubt about that. However, our domestic environment is such that we are now able to enjoy life in a way that wasn't possible 12 or even 6 months ago - and the natural continuation and extension of that is travel bubbles with neighbouring nations.
So why then is a restart of domestic cruising continuing to be delayed? With a quarantined and negative-tested crew, and negative-tested passengers, the prospect of domestic cruising should not be any more a risk than jumping on a plane and heading overseas.
It's time that the Australian government committed to a phased resumption of cruising in this country - 18,000 to 25,000 jobs are dependent on the industry and that alone should be reason enough to take the next logical step and allow domestic sailings to resume.
Thanks for watching.
