Ever wondered why your cruise ship fly's a foreign flag at the back? Or has the name of a city on the other side of the world painted on its stern? A flag of convenience refers to when a cruise ship is registered in a different country than the one where the ship's owners are based. This is also called "open registry".

About this video:
A cruise ship's port of registry is displayed on or towards the stern of the cruise ship. Cruise ships also fly the maritime flag of the country where that city is located.
As with all types of commercial vessel ā cruise ships can be registered or flagged in a variety of different ports. This is known as a flag of convenience. There is no requirement for any link between the port of registry / flag of convenience and the operational home port of a ship. Special Thanks to Retired Commodore Christopher Rynd for helping clear up details on the Flag of Convenience.
