Where will it end? Update on Cruising with Ben and David and other Cruise Ship Controversies

The first cruise ship controversy that comes to mind from recent cruise news is the video “Censored” by Cruising with Ben and David. While cruising on the MSC World Europa, Ben and David were censored by the crew when they were asked to stop filming on the request of a fellow cruiser. This created a controversy in the cruise industry: should one passenger’s right to privacy have preference over another’s right to freedom of the press? But that’s not the only cruise ship controversy that’s been in the news lately. Norwegian Cruise Line also made headlines when they stranded passengers on an African island. Eight cruisers from the Norwegian Dawn were on a shore excursion with a third party company which ran late and arrived at the pier over an hour after all-aboard time. While the ship was still anchored in the harbor, the captain refused to allow the tardy cruisers to board the ship. NCL did follow ship protocol and their cruise contract, but the eight passengers feel that they failed to provide basic duty of care. The cruise controversy here is a classic one between the captain’s responsibility to the many versus the desires of the few. In our final cruise ship controversy, we look at the moral obligation of travel agents to their clients. Travel agent Monica Faulkner offered the opportunity for her clients to join a themed charity cruise on the Carnival Horizon. Unfortunately, many of the bookings were canceled by Carnival Cruise Line a month before the departure day. And even more unfortunately, Monica Faulkner neglected to tell her clients or refund their money. When the would-be cruisers arrived at the pier, there were no cabins available and the ship sailed away without them. Monica Faulkner was on that ship, though!
