I find myself sitting here today in my cruise scarf, gazing at the majestic Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background, as I prepare to embark on a 10-night cruise to the Pacific Islands aboard the Carnival Splendor. This journey was initially planned as a solo adventure, but fate had other plans. I soon discovered that I couldn't book a solo cabin, and thus began my unexpected journey into booking for two.
My solo cruise adventure took an unexpected turn when I encountered a challenge while booking. Despite my initial intention to cruise alone, the booking process forced me to reserve a cabin for two. It seemed that solo cabins were unavailable, forcing me to pay an additional $300. This brought the total cost of my 10-night Pacific Islands cruise to $1,020.
One of my concerns revolved around how the cruise company would handle my situation if my designated cruise buddy failed to show up. I had prepared my intended cruise buddy for the possibility that the company might contact them, like a past experience with Disney Cruise Line. However, this time, the company did not make any such contact.
Upon arriving at the check-in counter, I explained my unique situation to Michelle, the woman overseeing the check-in process. She promptly provided me with the necessary information and stamped my documents. To my surprise, by the time I reached Jake, the staff member responsible for scanning passengers aboard the ship, my cabin had been updated to accommodate just one person.
While it might seem like an unconventional approach, I've found that this method of booking for two and then sailing solo can save a significant amount of money. Despite the added anxiety, I've employed this strategy on multiple occasions when solo cabins were unavailable, and it has proven effective. It's worth mentioning that this approach may not be suitable for everyone, especially those uncomfortable with the possibility of last-minute changes.
Additionally, I had to travel to Sydney, departing from a port different from my home in Brisbane. The total cost of this 10-day cruise to the Pacific Islands on Carnival Splendor, including the booking for two, the additional expenses, and the departure from Sydney, added up to a considerable sum. While the Carnival Splendor might not be my favourite cruise ship, I decided to embark on this journey, seizing the opportunity for a 10-day adventure to the Pacific Islands.
In conclusion, my solo cruise check-in experience was an unconventional yet cost-effective way to embark on a memorable journey. The initial hiccup in booking for two turned out to be a minor inconvenience in exchange for significant savings. While it's not a strategy for everyone, I found it to be a worthwhile approach, allowing me to explore the stunning Pacific Islands on a budget. Despite the quirks and unexpected turns, I'm ready to set sail on the Carnival Splendor and look forward to new adventures and discoveries on this 10-night cruise.
