Day 4 of our NCL Jade Mexican Riviera cruise takes us to La Paz, Mexico (Pichilingue) – a port that completely surprised me in the best way. In this vlog, I walk you through exactly how the $10 cruise shuttle works, whether you should go to the beach or downtown first, what the Malecon is really like, and my honest review of Jasmine specialty dining on Norwegian Jade.
We start the morning with a calm sit-down breakfast at Grand Pacific instead of fighting for buffet seating (with a quick tip on using La Cucina as overflow), then I head to the spa before disembarking. NCL is trialing a new facial recognition system at the gangway, so I share how that worked in real life and what to expect when you walk off the ship in Pichilingue.
From there, I buy the $10 round-trip shuttle pass that covers both the beach and downtown La Paz. First stop: a beautiful local beach with clear water, tons of fish, rentable cabanas and paddle craft, and easy access to food, drinks, and restrooms. Then we transfer to the Terminal Turística and spend the afternoon walking the Malecon, checking out the waterfront, side streets, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and even a surprisingly nice Sears. I talk about safety, prices (including a $3 beer at Sushi/Bar Longer), and whether you really need an excursion here or can just explore on your own.
Back on board, I head to O’Sheehan’s for a relaxed late lunch (the only full restaurant open at 2 p.m. on this port day), then slow down with a few hours in the spa to actually enjoy vacation instead of rushing from activity to activity. In the evening, I try Jasmine specialty dining for the first time and give an in-depth review of the menu structure (the “pick any four items” gotcha), portion sizes, service, and how it compares to Nama on Norwegian Viva. I’m honest about why this is the first time I’ve walked away from an NCL specialty restaurant feeling like I didn’t get my money’s worth and why I wouldn’t book Jasmine again at full price.
We wrap up the night with dessert and pizza from the buffet, a surprisingly good family-friendly comedy show, an 80s party on Deck 13 complete with the Thriller dance, and live piano music in front of Magnum’s before calling it a night. If you’re sailing the Mexican Riviera on Norwegian Jade (or any NCL ship stopping in La Paz/Pichilingue), this video should give you a realistic look at your options in port and on board, plus a few tips to help you spend your time and money wisely.
