Vesuvius (AD 79) On August 24 (or possibly October 24), AD 79, Mount Vesuvius violently erupted. A giant plume of ash, pumice, and volcanic gases soared into the sky—some 27–33 km high—burying nearby towns including Pompeii and Herculaneum For about 18 hours, lighter ash and pumice rained down, collapsing roofs and trapping many people. Yet, this first stage gave some residents time to flee . Around midnight into the next morning, pyroclastic surges—extremely hot, fast-moving clouds of gas and rock—swept through the city at speeds over 100 mph and temperatures up to ~700 °C, instantly killing those who stayed Pompeii was swiftly buried under 4–6 meters of ash and debris, preserving buildings, artifacts—and tragically—their victims Landmarks in video.
