Tips for making the most of breakfast on board

My thoughts, taken March 2026 on the Western Mediteranean Itinerary
The breakfast buffet was pretty much the same every day.
Croissants, pin wheel danish, brioche, sweet breads, muffins and pastries first. These were all made fresh on board, and I found myself getting up early to have a pastry while it was still warm. We liked the mini pin wheel danishes the best.
Next up, full English breakfast fare, with baked beans, potatoes, vegetable and several options of eggs, I disliked every egg on this buffet, the sunny side up eggs were not cooked and cold, the scrambled were out of a bag, and tasted weird, and the quiche was rubbery. the only egg I ate from the buffet was the eggs benny when I saw it.
There was always bacon, two types of sausage, pork and German minis, all were great and tasty.
Hot oatmeal and cream of wheat with toppings were hot and what you’d expect.
Cheeses, deli meats, olives, salad greens and whipped ricotta was very good.
On sea days they had smoked salmon, bagels and onion available which was excellent.
A wider selection of toast and breads, were always fresh and warm and a toaster nearby if you wanted to toast something yourself, assorted jams and jellies were in dispensers near the cereal.
Then a repeat of the eggs and bacon and sausages.
I few steps down, they had the cereals and yogurts, fresh fruit and juices. This was my favourite part of the buffet and the fresh fruit was always plentiful and sweet. The yogurt flavours changed every day and all were very good, we really liked the little parfaits they made in cups, with high quality greek yogurt and muesli next to the fresh squeezed juices.
Whole fruit was always available here too.
The buffet repeated much the same on the other side of the ship, which the addition of waffles and syrup.
My biggest complaint on this buffet were the eggs, but most of all what I secretly hated was the coffee. Considering this is an Italian line, sailing in Italy, I was very disappointed with the complimentary coffee at the buffet. It was hot, but you could barely tell it was coffee it was so weak. Think day old 7 11 coffee... We ended up making hot tea or buying an americano at the bar each morning.
Our observation was that this was a very hands off buffet, no customer service at all, no hostess that greeted you, no eye contact or talking from the folks putting the food out, and no one came around the tables and asked for drink orders. There was a spot at the end of the buffet where you could order coffees and specialty drinks. In addition, there was no hand washing station or trays at this buffet, so you had to put your food down to save your seat, then go back and get your drink.
There was lots of seats, inside and out, our favourite spot to sit was outside at the aft of the ship, there are doors to outside and you can sit watching the ship wake. Nice way to spend the morning.
Overall the breakfast buffet was under average, nothing too fancy, but hot and plentiful. #msccruises #mscorchestra #cruisefood #cruisetips #breakfastbuffet
